That's 'professional distortion' ;-) Having spent a certain time in University
doing some research activities, I like to be documented before tackling a new
field.

It's an intermediate version between the New QL and the GIII QL, with a
battery test circuit, but no test lamp on the back. My bet is that it was an
afterthought of Canon marketing dept., because the 'L' is nowhere to be seen
on the camera itself. You know you've got one when your QL is not marked GIII
but yet has a test button on the eyepiece. It works exactly like a GIII for
all purposes and intent, but was probably built in mainland Japan instead of
Taiwan (all GIIIs come from Taiwan) and has a slightly more durable ever
ready case (made of plastic instead of laquered cardboard - it cracks instead
of peeling). This is not completely futile, because the camera has no 'off'
switch, and without case or lens cap it will draw current from the battery.
