I think this is more common than you might think. The last time I had a Sony
product worked on, it was the same thing. I don't entirely understand this
plan, but it does make things easier on the repairman, as the estimate
process is eliminated. For a big company, they probably don't consider
repair enough of their business to try to maximize profits, but just the
occasional bit of income for a department that is mostly doing warranty
work.
