I solved the problem. I don't know why I never noticed this before but the
rings I use to mount the refractor to the dove tail plate on top of the
Schmidt Cassegrain detach from their base. And surprise, surprise, the
screw is the same size and number of threads as the tripod screw. So I'm
able to mount one ring to the tripod and if I place the ring at the very
back of the refractor tube I get more than acceptable stability with the
camera attached. :) So now all I have to do is wait for this early spring
cold snap and snow flurries to end so I can get back to the pond.
