this is the first good glimpse of the river from the South Kaibab trail.
I learned from the NPS ranger that the river should be red (duh,
colorado) rather than green. The big dam that creates Lake Powell in
Utah removes most of the silt. J.W. Powell supposedly described the
river as "too thick to drink but too thin to plow."
