I have been printing with an old Epson Stylus Photo EX since my 1160
went belly up a year or so ago. This is a good printer, though slow,
and the OEM inkset doesn't work well with my favorite Ilford Classic
papers. I now use Lyson Fotonic carts, which are very compatible with
Ilford papers, though they suffer a bit from metamerism. Nothing's
perfect.
The Stylus Photo EX goes about 12" wide. The inability to use 13"
wide papers without ripping them down to about 11.75" is becoming a
hassle, and makes 13" roll papers a virtual impossibility, so I have
been thinking about purchasing an Epson 1280. I am not interested in
the newer inks and printers with pigment ink sets at this time. The
1280 I think is a proven successor in the Photo EX bloodline, and I
want to stay there.
What I'd like to know is whether anyone has the 1280 (or 1270) and
prints with OEM inks on Ilford papers? My complaint about the OEM ink
with the Photo EX is that the ink does not really enter the Ilford
emulsion properly but stays more or less on the surface of the paper
and remains tacky for a long period of time. Lyson prints are fairly
dry and certainly smearproof almost instantly.
I could just stay with Lyson, but I'd like to get a printer whose OEM
ink works with Ilford papers if possible.
TIA,
Joel W.
