While on the subject of well implemented software it's hard to beat 
"Beyond Compare" from <http://www.scootersoftware.com/> as a file 
comparison tool.  Not free but you can get a 30 day free trial which is 
actually 30 separate days of usage, not necessarily consecutive days.
