I realize now I didn't completely answer your question. You have to pick a
mode and stick with it. In other words, you can't take a spot reading while in
center-weighted mode or, for instance, a highlight reading while in ESP. You
get one reading per mode, no multi-spot averaging, etc. It all seems to work
really well, though.
And in case there's any confusion, the highlight and shadow thingies I referred
to as being really cool are not the metering modes, although they definitely
are cool too, but one of the after-shot info displays you can choose. The
areas of a shot that are either over- or underexposed blink on and off,
depending on the mode selected. Helps idiot-proof getting correct exposure,
sometimes arguably more helpful even than the histogram.
