No. Not at all. You have certainly flushed out my understanding of
things many times.
Don't know about the casting bit. The D100 had the top end of the
F80. Some people even managed to install F80 focusing screens in
them. The D200 is APS-C sized throughout and its prism hump looks
about the same to me. So maybe they would fit, especially if they had
a long term development plan in that direction. Certainly the large
lens circle might indicate that they did.
