I don't know the specifics. My assumption is that the dynamic range
of the sensor, followed by adjustments in the gain prior to the A/D
are set to give performance appropriate for a specified ISO setting.
So for example, at iso 200, some of the dynamic range of the sensor
is sacrificed by adding 2x gain before the A/D converter. Hence
the sensor is operated at a lower S/N ratio, (less light), while the
signal is boosted back up to the range of the A/D converter with gain.
