Otherwise, it's too easy for someone up to no good to claim that
their lens (which they just happen to have the complete serial number
for!) has been stolen. Serial numbers are valuable pieces of info,
and should be treated as needing at least weak confidentiality
protection. (This goes for more than just Zuikos, natch...)
Doing what I suggested forces the blackhearts to guess amongst 100
different numbers, while still providing sufficient info for the
honest to figure out the approximate age (and lens/coating
configurations) of the lens in question. In fact, with most lenses,
you could probably 'x' out the last three digits.
