The default, vuescan.ini, works fine, including remembering different
settings for different modes. HOWEVER, when you donload and install a
new version, it writes a new default vuescan.ini over the existing one.
So you do need to save the current one under a different name or in a
different directory before installing an update or risk losing all your
settings.
Given the frequency with which Ed issues updates, this is not a trivial
matter.
