The duration of a full-dump flash is directly related to power. A small
flash in a P&S may well be 1/40,000, but a big studio strobe can be very
long. A 4000 ws pack into one head could well be down about 1/125. At the
commerical studio we had Norman 2000 ws packs, and the duration was under
1/250.
As heads are added to the pack, the duration becomes less, so as most pro
users have more than one head on a pack, it isn't a problem.
Long duration is also the secret to the big flash bulbs. There are times
when I miss the light weight and simplicity of bulbs. Most of the smaller
bulbs have the output of a really big strobe, as a fraction of the weight.
