So, you are disappointed that this combination works poorly, just as the
instructions say it will work? That seems just a little bit unfair to
Oly and the 2xA.

Telextenders always have a negative effect on lens performance. With
lenses for which the extenter is designed, the degradation may not be
great, but is always there. With lenses for which it is not suited, one
should not be surprised to get poor results.

Take a look at the tests with and without extenders on Gary's test site.
The results are never outstanding. He tried the 2xA with the 90/2,
another unrecommended combo, and got poor results.

Generally speaking, with lenses of the same general quality of design
and manufacture, a prime of twice the focal length will always
outperform a lens plus 2x telextender. It's no surprise at all that the
2004 outperforms the 100/2 plus 2xA. It also outperforms the 100/2.8
plus 2xA, an Oly recommended combo. It's the nature of optical physics.

Telextenders aren't magic, they are a shortcut, or subutitute, for use
in situations where the longer lens is impractical or unavailable.
