The thing is, it's the best zoom in that general speed/focal length
available for MF cameras like the OMs. One of the great lenses of all time.
The next best is probably the Tokina 80-200/2.8, which is very close to
as good as the Tamron. It's not really smaller, a 200mm f2.8 lens has to
have a front element with a 71.5mm clear opening, so the size is pretty
much fixed. The Tokina is lighter, though. With hood, it weighs 1160
gr., about 23% less than the Tamron. They are slightly rare in OM mount.
