Wonderful trip and pics! Are the painted hills all volcanic cinders?

My wife and I took a little trip over to Eastern Oregon the last week of
October. Headed out on the ferry Sunday night after my wife got off work
and made it over the pass in buckets of rain. The next couple of days we
enjoyed summerlike (OK, for us 70 is summerlike) weather then it was
blowing rain with snow above 4000'. Much of the driving is above 4000'.
We walked in the ruts of the Oregon Trail in sleet then partly cloudy
and cool for the rest of the trip. Pretty typical for fall in the PacNW.
We finished off by taking in the Portland Antique and Collectible Show.
All-in-all a pretty good trip. Only a dead battery and one flat tire.
Those roads are not for the faint of heart.
