It's not all ignorance. It can also be a matter of taste or prefference.
I know the difference and given the choice in a modest range zoom, I'll
go for the better long end at the expense of the short end. Heck, I
mostly have a 45-480 eq. on the 300D. It's a matter of what focal
lengths one most uses.
