AG,
If you are refering to Black Flies then count me out. I made the
mistake of taking a canoe camping trip in the Adirondack Mtns. one Memorial Day
weekend. HUGE MISTAKE. Black Flies emerged on Day 2 and I still have the scars.
Now mind you I grew up in SC and deal with mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, etc. but I
have experienced nothing like those dastardly creatures. If I could figure out
a way to return them to Pandora's Box...
I never again set foot in the Adirondacks until after July.

Drink bottled water is pretty much a normalcy these days. Even
when you have decent tasting water available.
It's a little hit-and-miss when it comes to decent tap water in
the UP. I know of a few places that are ok, but others could be
leased for mineral-rights!
The flies are nasty, nasty, nasty. About the only thing that
slows them down is a decent snowstorm--and that's not even a
guarantee. These things bite like rabid rottweilers and drink
deet for recreation.
