Apologies to the gun owning members of the list but I'm talking about
a 4x5 and not a .45. I live in Canada so our right to bear arms is
infringed. Fortunately, our right to bare arms (and even bare chests
in Ontario) is not infringed. :-)

Thought I'd share a bit of my experience with getting the 4x5 out to
shoot. Last Friday I planned to use some overtime and take the
afternoon off to shoot some film. I'd been trying to take the
afternoon off for the last 3 weeks so I figured a good way to ensure
that I did take it off was to lug a lot of heavy gear to work.

I'm not sure how photogenic my subjects were because I definitely
lugged the gear more than 500 yards. That's simply because I walked
the 1.5-2km from home as I don't drive. However, there's parking at
the back of the building where I work so theoretically I could have
done my shooting within 500 yards of a car so I think it still
qualifies as photogenic.

I ended up taking the camera and tripod out onto the roof of the
building I work and taking some shots of the roof line. Nothing too
phenominal, just wanted to get used to working with sheet film and to
get back some results to check that my exposures were good (I
bracketed a lot).

Fortunately, the roof is a grey asphalt shingle which happens to make
one giant grey card so that helped the metering a lot.

I started processing the negs last night in my photo class. I shot
Tmax 100 (all the local store had in stock for B&W sheet film when I
went in) and processed it in XTol 1:1. I used the suggested time of
10.5mins at 68F. I still have a lot of sheets left to process. I'm
doing them in 4x5 trays and only 1 at a time since this is my first
time processing sheet film so it was recommended I stick to 1 at a
time until I get the hang of it so that I don't scratch the negs.

I've really been enjoying working with B&W more and shooting with the
4x5 has been a lot of fun. Once I finish the processing I may post
some scans to show. Haven't checked what the contrast is like yet for
the time so I may end up tweaking the process for the future.
