I used to complain about the same thing, and try to hone my anticipatory
skills. Then one day it occurred to me that the battery on my 300D was
good for even a pretty long, active day of shooting, and I always
carried a charged spare on anything more than a casual walk. So I just
set the sleep delay to higher values. I think I started with 15 min.
Experiment showed that 4 min. was long enough to obviate most missed
shots during active shooting and 8 min. really did the job. Sure it's
still possible to miss one here and there, but with a little slightly
different anticipation, it has pretty much ended my frustration with the
slowish (1.5 sec.?) startup from off or sleep.

By the way, even that "instant" return of the E-500 from sleep mode is
0.9 sec. vs. > 0.5 from off/sleep to on for the 350D and > 0.1 sec. for
the D50. It's competitive, but not a leader there.
