It may not be a bad one but inadequate calibration ; I personaly tend to set
my CRT to very weak levels (~ 40% brightness, 30% contrast) for
wordprocessing[*]. Otherwise, I end up with terrible headaches after a couple
of days. I know that I must set the levels to 50% contrast, 75% brightness
when editing pictures, on the same monitor, to have a "correct" display of
what most people *should* view. Personalised preset levels recalled at a
button touch is a must to deal with different types of work.
[*] and I use the so called "reverse video" which should best be called "the
mode CRTs are intended to be used" (white text on black background), because
a screen works exactly opposite to a sheet of paper, black being the least
"excited" color, formed only by the metal shield reflexion through the glass.
Looking at a "paper white" page amounts to looking straight into a light bulb
for hours.
