One of the things I considered in choosing to purchase the F10 is the
lack of any output other than JPEG, and the limited DR that goes with
it. Other factors in the overall mix, and the lack of other cameras
meeting my other desired qualities - and with RAW, led me to decide to
go ahead anyway.
One thing I wanted to try out is using two shots at different exposures
combined to give a wide DR. No point trying it with tripiod and care, as
that's not how this camera will be used. So I took a fair number of
"double" exposures, hand held, by guess and by golly.
I think there is really a lot of potential here. I haven't tried any of
the software to do this (semi?) automatically. Partly because I expect
it may not work too well with my imperfectly registered shots. Partly
because I wanted to see what the process is like, so as to understand
it. Obvioiusly it's not for pros doing weddings/events, sports, that
sort of thing, but fine for a few shots for me.
So here are the first tries. Mostly not outstanding shots that would be
worth all the effort otherwise, but good try-outs. I notice that my
choice of exposures seems to have improved over a few days
<http://moosemystic.net/Gallery/tech/Combos/>.
The first shot was on my second day of serious shooting and my first
attempt at the technique. Clearly I could not get with the camera what
my eyes were seeing, so I tried it. In retrospect, I should have taken
another shot between the two I took in exposure. The differences are so
great that blending them is quite difficult.
The second shot works better, but I didn't tone down the "bright" shot
enough and lost some cloud highlight detail.
The third worked very well. Clean enough to look good in a pretty good
sized print, I think. The subject is again not of general interest, but
significant to those where there at the time.
I don't know what I was thinking when I took one of the shots of the
fourth example. How did I manage to cut off the fan light in one? Oh
well, I found the challenge of getting a good looking composite worth
while anyway. Another example of a subject that simply can't be captured
properly with a JPEG camera in one shot.
There are a few more that I may try out and add later. I don't know what
the DR number for these combo shots is, but it's a lot more than the
singles!
