Hi folks,
I have just learned that a New Zealand City Councillor, Lynne Pope from
Palmerston North, and a Swiss Peter Koch, one man from Texas (the three
of the core team) (and several other Europeans), working with Open Source
software development, responded to the pleas of a Louisiana pastor made on
an Open Source software discussion site..
They created (within about 2 hours) the ONLY central on-line database for
people to search for lost loved ones. There is no USA site that does this.
Access can also be made by cell-phone.
There are about 220,000 missing people. There is some difficulty about
deceased people; federal authorities don't want details made available, and
this is causing a lot of anguish. Red tape is a major problem in respect of
data and access to it. Refugees are spread all over the USA, and often
families have been split up and the members have totally lost contact with
each other. The site database is apparently easily searchable, and this site
is the only one available to provide comprehensive information .
Apparently there are a lot of scam sites preying on victims of Katrina,
including people offering shelter who intend to prey on both adults and
children .
The Federal aid is not going to the non-profit agencies that are setting up
shelters in Louisiana and Mississippi, a major one is apparently operating
right now on just $2,000
They intend to keep the site going permanently.
