Quite true and very difficult if you want to light the whole place 
evenly.  But I think one or two well diffused strobes pointed beyond the 
foreground subject is enough to get rid of the tunnel effect and produce 
a decent looking shot without having to claim architectural quality. 
Your point on the 4 layer Fuji films is well taken.  They seem to handle 
mixed lighting remarkably well.
