For many years I bought the big Ansel Adams wall calendars, each month with a
different photograph, printed at about 10x12 inches. Being both a packrat and
an Adams admirer, I was loathe to throw the old calendars away. Then, just
last year, as I began to realize that there would be no new or different
pictures since my multi-year collection contained at least one copy of every
well-known Adams photo, it also occurred to me that there are only so many ways
to arrange the days in a year.
So, hanging on the wall right by my desk is the 1994 calendar, which is exactly
the same as a proper 2005 calendar, and September's photo is one of my
favorite, although lesser-known, of Adams's: Redwoods, Bull Creek Flat,
Northern California, c. 1960. It lacks the drama of many of his landscapes,
but its quiet subtlety appeals to me somehow, subtle and gentle fellow that I
am. ;-)
As for next year, I know already that either the 1989 or 1995 calendar will
work just fine. In fact, I think I'm good until 2008, the next leap year. I'm
not sure either '88, '92, '96, '04 or '00 will do, but I'll worry about that in
December of '07.
