Your analysis is correct if the picture was to be used for
advertising purposes. The photo (with airbrushed windshield and
wheels and weeds cloned out) would make a decent double-truck
advertisement. You could throw all sorts of copy text into the
sky.
However, as a stand alone image on a page with white background,
well, it needs a frame at minimum. As a full-screen background,
well, it is pretty slick. If the website background was
anything but white, it also would have been just fine.
You may return to your being impressed. ;-)
