Seems a little pricey from here for the lens, but I suppose all the
extras make a difference.

There aren't variants like with the 50/1.8. Oly made three distinct
35-70 lenses and sold one which is a rebranded Cosina (Sold with the
OM2000, also made by Cosina)
In rough order of tested/reputed performance:
1. 35-70/3.6. Relatively large and heavy, relative to the others, the
only one made as a real Pro lens. Unique hood design which adjusts for
focal length setting. First rate lens
2. 35-70/3.5-4.5 An excellent performer which is amazingly small and
light. Not much bigger than a 50/1.4 and takes the same hood, which will
sotre reversed over the lens. A wonderful casual walking around lens. My
favorite.
3. 35-70/4 Pretty close to a tie with #2. Some would say better. I've
never had one and really like #2, so it gets listed first. :-)
4. 35-70/3.5-4.8 '5' and '8' are easy to mix up, but these are very
different lenses. The Cosina made '8' is still fairly small and light.
It's also not a bad lens in the overall scheme of things, but not as
good as any of the Oly made ones.
I use the 35-105/3.5-4.5 more than any 35-70.
