I asked -- the state comptroller's office said it might be "inappropriate"
for an out-of-state business to insist on collecting sales tax from an
exempt organization or business, but there's no law saying they _have_ to do
business with you. In other words, I don't get what I want, plus I get
banned from future purchases or bids. Great.
I just hope my queries have prompted them to flag Olympus Imaging America
for a future audit to confirm that they have truly remitted all that filthy
lucre they collect on behalf of each state.
