Since there can't be a whole lot of complicated stuff between the points
where the battery box attaches to the electronics and the AC adapter
attaches to the electronics it would seem that the most likely problem
is simply bad contact within/between the batteries and the battery box
or the contacts between the battery box and camera.
If you've already cleaned all of the contacts I would carefully inspect
everything to see if there's something obvious about the battery box or
its contacts with the camera that can somehow go awry. I note from
perusing the manual that the batteries do not make electrical contact
with the interior contacts of the battery case *until* the case is
inserted into the camera. Is there something you can see that might be
preventing proper contact when the battery case is inserted?
Beyond that I'm afraid I'm fresh out of suggestions other than one
simple one. Try a set of fresh, ordinary alkaline AA's. These will
provide a little more voltage and be a double check against there being
something mysterious wrong with your other batteries.
