I use 48-bit colour and do my editing in that mode. I crop the image
before any colour editing or rotation, to save time with the smaller
file that results. As soon as I have finished any Levels work I
reduce to 8-bit Greyscale for dust removal etc...
By the way, as Ken Norton has pointed out, it is sometimes attractive
to print a mono image in black & white instead of colour selected on
the printer.
You will have to persevere to get the right effect from your scan,
especially if your film is not available as an option in Vuescan.
