It's been just over two months since I got my E-1. I have no regrets and am
enjoying using it, although I'm quite certain that I have taken far fewer
pictures with it than some of you would expect: probably not 500 yet, and most
of those just playing around, learning how the thing works. I am more than
satisfied with the results, both with the digital lenses -- particularly the
LWMNBN -- and the old Zuiko glass.
I just realized today that in the two months since its arrival I haven't taken
a single shot with an OM. Admittedly, for a variety of reasons, I haven't been
particularly photographically active this summer, missing the first TOPE since
I joined this group, but to go that long without picking up an OM -- well, I
don't know quite how to explain such strange behavior.
On the other hand, despite the new-fangled digital toy, I find myself more and
more drawn to the old Mamiya RB67 and the ancient Graphics, both the XLRF
rangefinder and the little Crown folder. While I haven't taken nearly as many
shots with these as I have with the E-1 in the last 60 days, I've enjoyed using
them at least as much, if not more, and have gotten from them a far higher
percentage of keepers, naturally, since they require more deliberate use.
I was channel surfing the other night and stopped, naturally, on a program
about shooting the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. There were lots of
fancy, high-end digital cameras all around, taking candids and such. But when
it was time for the real photos, the money shots, the ones where flash units
and/or fill reflectors came out and the makeup was made just right and the pose
was perfect, the camera, the only camera, was a Mamiya RZ67. And that sure
looked like a film back to me.
I'm not sure what any of this means, if it means anything at all.
