I haven't even attempted it Alan, but in the spirit of encouraging you to
try so that we can all benefit from your experience (!), and knowing that
you of all people are more likely to have the requisite kit, how about
trying dark field illumination using one of the macro stands? That is to
say, illuminate the focusing screen from below, but against a dark
background. I believe that will allow the texture, design and lack of
imperfections to show up.
