Hmmm, I have the Shorter OED (OUP 1983) and it does indeed have
"artifact" as the main spelling, although it mentions "arte'" as the
spelling from 1821. More to the point is that the stem should the
same as "artificial" which is also based on the 2 Latin words that
Roger mentioned: "ars" and "facere". I shall have to review my
original "Ahem" I regret to say ...
