I thought about that. The variable power control really is
handy. However, I figured that this was a stop-gap measure
anyway so get the one that fits the bag better and still
accomplishes the task. Another factor is that the fresnel on
the 283 seems to provide a bit more even distribution of light
than the 285. I always found the 285 to generate a few nasty
hotspots.
I guess one other thing got my attention. This past week in
Chicago I saw three different pros covering the show that were
using them. (2 were 283, 1 was a 285). These pros were using
high-end N*kon and C*non digitals. Two other pros were using
dedicated flashes. Hmm. 3/5 were using the ancient Vivitars on
megadigital cameras?
Anyway, I did notice that the colorbalance on the new flash was
a bit better than my old one. I still may look for a donor 5200
as it is a fine flash.
