This reminds me of another setting. Exposure compensation.
I usually put this at -.3 EV to afford myself a little headroom to make
sure the highlights don't get blown. Some people will even go to -.7
routinely.
While it's good to compensate on the side of under-exposure, getting the
exposure right preserves the right balance in those middle values. No free
lunch.
