I wouldn't think so either ordinarily. In this case, Sony specifically
touts the pass through conversion capability:
"The camcorder analog inputs feature a built-in Analog to Digital
converter that will convert your analog video/audio to a digital signal
that can either be recorded to tape or passed through the i.Link
interface to a compatible computer."
Also, the camcorders with this feature came out at the same time as the
Digital8 video editor. Reading about them, it looks like the same A/D
video converter may be in both. The one with pass-through conversion and
High-8 play/conversion costs $50 more than the regular D8 camcorder.
I woudn't have asked, but you intimated some source of knowledge about
converter quality.
