I've been stopping at the original Dixie off of I-55 in McLean for more
than 20years when I drive down from NW Indiana to southern IL to
visit my dad. Food's decent, depending on the cook, and the pie is
good.
It's more of a tradition than anything -- back in '72, when my family
moved from Chicago down to Southern Illinois, my dad moved down
several months ahead of the rest of us so I could finish school.
Every Friday, my mom would pack up my little brother, take me out
of school at 2pm, and we'd drive down to spend the weekend with
Dad. Always stopped at Dixie going both ways -- it became a
landmark on the trip.
Now that Mom's gone, I stop there because it holds good memories
for me. And it's roughly halfway down.
