I have had consistently good experience with B+W, Heliopan, and Hoya multi
coated filters. In my experience, non-slim filters on wide angle lenses
result in vignetting. To eliminate the chance of any vignetting on say a
49mm thread lens, use a 62mm filter on a 49mm - 62mm step up ring along with
a wide angle 62mm lens hood. A 55mm filter on a 49mm - 55mm step up ring is
likely to work as well provided the lens is no shorter than 24mm in focal
length.
