That is 12 bits *linear* dynamic range, i.e. the bits are spread evenly over
the dynamic range. Film is logarithmic, meaning that half of your bit range
(2048 steps) will be spread over the top stop of dynamic range, and for each
stop darker, you have half as many bits. The darkest shadow will not be
represented by many bits at all.
Translated to the zone system, if you want 16 different tones in the darkest
zone, you will get a range of 8 zones = 8 stops. Your 12 stops would give you a
tonal range of 2 levels in the darkest zone.
Not the same at all as film.
