I'll throw in my 2 cents...
I was off the list for a long time, for reasons I won't get into right
now, but of all the lists I've been on, this one is certainly one of the
most polite.
There are excellent photographers on this list, and it is their experience
and insight I hope to steal from... I can probably look in the archives
for about 99% of my questions and find Bill Barber answering them 10x in
different grammatical fashions, but that's not that point..
It is the brotherhood, sisterhood of the list that I think people enjoy.
While I would like to keep the list as "photographically compliant" as
possible, I think photography is so broad that it's nigh impossible to not
be off topic, but strangely be on topic.
"I'm going to Cambodia next month, what should I see?" If that was the
topic, is that off topic? To me, I don't think so..
The standards are different. I agree, the signal-to-noise ratio might be
a bit high, but then again, I'd rather be reading some of the more off
topic threads than "Do you need v*agra?" ads of which I get about 200 a
day in my inbox.
You can do what I do:
Sort by thread!!! Then just read what you want, and delete the others...
Stay on the list, you can always learn something.. I do all the time.
I bought a 200mm because I saw "someone" from the list (cough cough, won't
mention who, but he has a 180mm F2.8, is in Hong Kong I think..) who just
took great pics. His pics always stayed in my mind, and so I bought a
long tele to do full-length portraits..
In an ever changing world, a list in which you can take solace in, is not
that bad..
Ok so that was more like $17.68 instead of 2 cents... :-)
