A month or two ago I bought a set of batteries and charger from
wally world. These are branded "Digital" and come bundled with a
high-speed charger. I got the 2200 version of the AAs.
In practice, they have worked out great in the camera flash.
Last night, I fired off around 150 full-power (or near
full-power) flashes and the recycle times were running no more
than five seconds. The best this flash has ever done is eight
seconds from a full-dump and never more than 100 flashes on
other batteries. I went home before the batteries gave out. (I
did have a spare set in my pocket--just in case).
Unknown about the long-term health of the batteries. The
high-speed charger gets them quite toasty so you know that it's
force-feeding electrons into them at an abnormal rate.
The high current of these things worried me at first, but my
flash is one of the high-voltage versions of the Vivitar line
and I've never cooked anything in it yet--knock on wood.
