My advice would be to take just what is essential and only what you
can afford to lose. I don't know about Bolivia with regard to theft,
but in southern Mexico where we traveled by public bus, anything of
value stayed on my person. As a result, I took only my XA and got
along more than just fine. In Costa Rica, we rented a car, but we
also traveled light since we were birding a lot and anything not in a
hotel room had to be well hidden in the car.
Aside from theft concerns, I feel that carrying a limited selection of
gear frees you to enjoy the trip more. The XA is so discreet and easy
to carry that you are never without a camera and never too obvious
about carrying one. The only time in Mexico that I wished I had a
second camera was when I had the XA loaded with Provia or Velvia and
came across the interior of a church that I wanted to photograph.
Flash is forbidden, so all I could do was support the camera on the
top of a pew and get the best shot I could get.
On the issue of film speed, again, I do not know about Bolivia, but we
had to go through X-Ray twice on the way to Mexico and twice on the
way back. Once at the airport and once each in customs. If I had
higher speed film, all the trips through the xray machines would have
concerned me a bit and my impression was that having things
hand-checked would have been a real hassle - there and here.
