Their consumer division was never that great. The professional tape recorder
division was much better. Although from an inovation point of view, the very
first Ampex recorder was a close copy of German Magnetophon technology
captured in WWII. The magnetophon was way ahead of anything else of the time,
being a true hi-fi recorder with modern type of iron oxide tape, low distortion
and wide bandwidth. Equivalent of a modern taperecorder. It enabled the
Germans to fool people into thinking Hitler was broadcasting live, from places
he was not actually at.
