I believe one of the first mentions of this is in the Second book of
Samuel, Chapter 11, Verse 1:
"Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to
battle, that [King] David sent Joab and his servants with him and all
Israel, and he destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But
David stayed at Jerusalem. (And got himself into big trouble with Bathsheba)
