Generally, the Frontier and others are subject to a lot of operator and
serviceman error. there are a lot of options that can really change the
appearance.
the local lab I use has a Konica minilab, and every time the official Konica
man comes in, he diddles the settings to drugstore minilab. stuff looks awful,
so the operator immediately resets everything to less drastic settings, and it
gets great results.
They even use the scanner to output to a durst printer for large prints, and
they look great.
