I've posted in defence of the EBX before. I think it's a great film -
especially so given its half the price of the Fuji alternatives. The big
downside is the grain, which is noticeably coarser than the 'F' family.
The thing I really like is the colour palette - I find it renders the scene
much more as I remember it. For me it's definitely a more accurate saturation,
at least in UK light, than the fuji's - skies are blue not violet. I do a lot
of climbing photography with it which, whilst not portraiture, does include
lots of skin and faces. I'm much more confident of a usable result on EBX than
Velvia.
The 100VS seems very similar to me, not enough to justify the doubled cost at
least, though I do use it on 120 where EBX isn't available. Now what I'd really
like to see is Kodak release a finer-grained version (slower if need be), which
could replace Velvia for me. With the demise of velvia it could be a good
time.... though I guess Kodak are chasing other markets.
