I'm afraid I have no idea what was going on between me and the XA. I
checked the rewind knob and the film advance without film and found them
both to be free and smooth. I loaded another roll of test film and this
time did not do anything gingerly but instead wound on normally if not
vigorously. Absolutely no problem.
I can only assume, as others suggested, that somehow the film was stuck
or askew in the cassette and worked normally once I broke it free.
However, the film was Portra 160 which I have shot plenty of without
ever a problem.
Who knows. Seems fine now.
