Interesting article on camera phones, they are talking of shipping 10Mpixel
phones within a year, but even the current 3Mpixel devices seem to be a tech
demonstration, rather than mainstream:

A few quotes:
>>By 2003, almost 70 million mobile phone cameras were sold. An estimated 150
>>million more were sold in 2004. Asia remains the fastest growing region for
>>camera phones.
.............
"We have to ask ourselves what the value proposition [is for] camera phones,"
said Jason Hartlove of Agilent Technologies (Santa Clara, Calif.) "Portability,
spontaneity and ease of use are enriching the lives of end users to a degree
never before achieved in photography," he added.
.......
"We have witnessed tremendous growth in the placement of camera equipped mobile
phones around the world, and the trend shows no signs of abating."
"CCD will continue to provide high quality imaging in cellphone cameras for the
near future," said Sony's Tadakuni Narabu (Kanagawa, Japan).
<<
Sony has a lead in very small pixel size CCD's so that is likely a biased
comment. The Sony's CCD's technology was originally for their video cams so
that is why they have highly refined small pixel technology.
