It's easy, really. Your Conservative Party (which you call Republicans)
are illiberal (in terms of civil liberties). Our Labour Party (the
equivalent of your Democrats) are also very illiberal: they represent
the Nanny State and detest personal freedom and civil liberties.
The trouble is, for all their hot air when out of office, all political
parties become control freaks when they take office. Civil liberties
have been massively eroded in this country throughout the various
post-war governments (irrespective of the colour of the party in power)
with no discernible benefit of any kind to the inhabitants.
To me, the most amazing (as much for its lack of opposition as the lies
on which it was based) law against civil liberties in this country was
under the Tories: the requirement to wear seat belts in the front seats
of a motor car.
