My daughter and friend are off across the country today eventually
ending up in either central NY or NJ or MA for grad school. We'll know
which next month. Anyway, before they left we "treated" Grisha (the
friend who may soon become a part of the family) to a grueling family
slide show along with typical Clockwork Orange jokes. We haven't dug out
the old slides in years and this was the first time using this projector
given to us by my mother-in-law. It's a Carousel 850 manual focus with a
Ektanar 5" f2.8 lens. It was immediately apparent that the lens was way
too long for a small living room. Is the common and cheap
Ektanar102-152mm zoom lens any good or even short enough for an 8-12'
projection distance and giving a large image? Other cheap wide
alternatives?
The other thing I quickly figured out is that the manual focus is a
real PITA so I'm already thinking of getting the 850H with AF or another
Carousel model that uses the same accessories, trays, lens and stack
loader, etc. Recommendations? 650H? 860H? I'm not looking to spend much
money as we don't drag out the slides very often and I see a lot of old
Carousels available in the $20-50 range. One concern I have with the
auto focus is the old gears and motor wearing out. Could make that
certain auction site a crap shoot. How big of a problem is that? Easy
fix or not?
I suppose though if I had a decent slide projection setup I might
get back into shooting more slide film. Watching a so-called slide show
of jpg's on the HDTV just isn't very satifying by comparison.
Thanx,
Mike
ps- for those who tried and couldn't, interisland.net was down for a
couple of hours for maintenance late night our time but is back up and
running.
