Interesting how threads have lives of their own. Brian asked
specifically about the 50/2 to use for actual macro purposes, spawning a
long thread of people mostly lauding it as a general purpose lens. Then
he tried to pull it back to his question about macro performance, and
again specifically asked for hard test data, but it got away again. So,
may we just read it as given that the 50/2 is the best general purpose
50 mm lens ever made by anybody - And it does MACRO!! - and get on with
our lives? :-)
Brian, I think you must conclude that the only direct reference to tests
of the 50/2 at macro distances that the list can come up with is Gary's
vague reference:
"The 50mm f/2 and 90mm f/2 macros have floating elements, providing
aberration correction over a wider range of focal lengths than do macros
without them. They are supposedly corrected for 1:10, but USA
photography magazine testing has shown they perform better
at ca. 1:40 than they do in the range of 1:2 to 1:4"
I've dropped Gary a line to find out if he can give more info or some
more direction on where and when the test appeared.
